Introduction to Memo writing

A memo should be between 150 and 200 words long and requires the following information:
    •  Who is the memo to?
    •  Who is the memo from?
    •  What is the memo about?
    •  What is the date?
This information should be positioned next to the appropriate headings as in the example below. A job title may be added after the name of the sender (and/or recipient).

Read through the information and identify what information needs to be included in your memo. Write the memo and add further points to provide additional information.

Sometimes the information given is in a suitable order. If it is not, you will have to group the points relating to the same subject together. When you have done this work out where to put the extra points you have added. The information in the memo should be presented in a logical order.

The language used in memos is shorter and more direct than a letter. It is important to stay to the point, but be polite. Make sure that the person who receives the memo will be able to understand the message.
