Classroom Language: Starting The Class


Classroom language is the routine language that is used on a regular basis in classroom. Knowing this language reduces the amount that students are forced to use their mother tongue and increases the amount of the target language they are using; it makes the language classroom environment more authentic.

1. Greeting
  • Good morning/afternoon, everybody.
  • Hello, everyone.
  • Hello there, Anggie.
  • How are you today?
  • How are you getting on?
  • How's life? 
  • How are things with you?
  • Are you feeling better today, Santi?
  • How are you this morning, Susan?
  • Dany, how are you today?
  • Do you have a cold?

2. Introductions
  • My name is Mr/Mrs/Ms Yahe. I'm your new English teacher.
  • I'll be teaching you English this year.
  • I've got five lessons with you each week.


3. Register
  • Let’s take attendance, shall we?
  • I’m going to take attendance 
  • Who is absent today?
  • Who isn't here today?
  • What's the matter with Cindy today?
  • What's wrong with Rani today?
  • Why were you absent last Wednesday, Anto?



4. Time to begin
  • Let's start
  • Let's begin our lesson now.
  • Is everybody ready to start?
  • It’s time to begin, please stop talking.
  • I hope you are all ready for your English lesson.
  • I think we can start now.
  • Now we can get down to work.
  • Please look at the whiteboard.
  • Write this down in your notebooks.
  • Pass back these sheets/handouts.

5. Waiting to start
  • I'm waiting for you to be quiet.
  • We won't start until everyone is quiet.
  • Stop talking and be quiet.
  • Settle down now so we can start.
  • Please sit down, everyone.

6. Late
  • Where have you been?
  • We started ten minutes ago. What have you been doing?
  • Did you miss your bus?
  • Did you oversleep?
  • Don't let it happen again.
